MANGALURU: A 50-year-old hotelier from Mumbai and his five-year-old son are said to be missing after police found his car abandoned near Nethravati river bridge on Sunday morning.
Police said Gopalkrishna Rai and his son came to Mangaluru two days ago to attend a religious function at Pavoor, near Konaje, on Saturday. Sources said Rai and his son left the venue around 2am Sunday.
According to police, his car — a Maruti WagonR, registered in Maharashtra — was found near the bridge in Ullal police station limits.
A note from his vehicle has been recovered.
Officers investigating the case said they have launched a search operation for the missing fatherson duo, besides alerting fishermen. A case has been registered at the Konaje police station.
After several cases of suicide or suicide attempts from the bridge were reported in recent months, Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath had suggested securing the driveway with high railings besides installing CCTV cameras on both ends of the bridge.
The demand for safety railings and CCTV cameras intensified after the body of Café Coffee Day founder VG Siddhartha was found in the river after he was suspected to have jumped off the bridge in July 2019.
