TN police mourn deaths of two officers who died on poll duty

Dindigul/Salem: The Tamil Nadu Police department has mourned the tragic demise of two officers who suffered fatal heart attacks while performing their duties during the Tamil Nadu assembly election 2026. The department also expressed its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.A statement released by head of police force (HoPF) Sandeep Rai Rathore stated that, deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Ramakrishnan, 55, and special sub-inspector (SSI) P Kannadasan, 59, collapsed on Thursday (April 23) evening, leaving the department and their families in profound grief.Ramakrishnan, an officer of the Narcotic Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in Ramanathapuram, was a seasoned veteran who joined the force as a sub-inspector in 1996. While stationed near Kalanjipatti under the Oddanchatram police limits on Thursday, he experienced severe chest pain and collapsed around 5.45pm. Despite immediate medical intervention, he could not be revived.Ramakrishnan is survived by his wife, Santhana Bhama, and three daughters.In a similar tragedy in Salem district, SSI P Kannadasan of the Malliyakarai police station passed away while serving as the officer-in-charge of mobile team for the Gangavalli assembly constituency. While monitoring a polling station in Nagiyampatti village at approximately 6.10pm, the 59-year-old officer collapsed due to a sudden cardiac arrest.Their mortal remains were laid to rest in their respective hometowns with full police honours, as high-ranking officials and colleagues gathered to pay their final respects.
