Madurai: Madurai district administration on Saturday released a 40-second teaser for the arrival of the 44th Chess Olympiad prestigious torch in Madurai on July 25. The teaser shows Madurai’s iconic Meenakshi temple and Teppakulam with a peppy folk music Madurai is known for. Mathichiyam Bala, a folk singer, has rendered his voice for the song.
The district administration has made elaborate arrangements to receive the torch.
Madurai is one among the 75 cities selected in the country where the torch is going to travel. The torch is coming to Madurai from Coimbatore and it will travel to Kanyakumari after that. “All arrangements are in place to receive the torch in Madurai,” said Madurai collector Dr Aneesh Sekhar. He released the teaser at Madurai collector office in the presence of corporation commissioner Simranjeet Singh Kahlon, District Rural Development Agency project director S Saravanan and district revenue officer
Sakthivel. The teaser will be played at strategic places in Madurai city.
The torch will be received at Madurai Meenakshi temple and taken around four Chithirai streets. There will be a reception at Teppakulam. The third stop will be Race Course grounds where cultural events are planned. Madurai has been given a two-hour slot for the torch ceremony, according to officials.
A week-long programme has been arranged in Madurai ahead of the torch reception. It will start with a cycle rally on Sunday, said Aneesh Sekhar.
Chess competitions and chess training are conducted for government and corporation school students. A rangoli competition will be conducted in the coming days. Quiz competition, face painting and fashing show for children will be conducted in view of the 44th Chess Olympiad in Chennai. Local ministers, elected representatives, sports personalities and grand masters from Madurai district and public will participate in the special events ahead of receiving the torch, the collector said. Earlier, he pasted Olympiad stickers on the vehicles, including his official vehicle.
