Sr citizen gets back property from son who abandoned him

Tirunelveli: The Tirunelveli district administration has come to the aid of an abandoned elderly person by retrieving his property from his son under provisions of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007.
Advocate T Jeni told TOI that P Poothathan Pillai, 85, a resident of Manakavalampillai Nagar at Palayamkottai used to live with his younger son Murugan.In 2015, Murugan registered the house situated on the eight cent property from his father’s name to his name and further registered the same in his wife’s name.
After getting possession of the property, the couple did not take care of Pillai and sent him out of his house. Due to this reason, the elderly man was living with his eldest son.
Later, Pillai submitted a petition through Jeni to the Tirunelveli district collector Shilpa Prabhakar Satish seeking to retrieve the property from Murugan. The collector directed the Tirunelveli sub-collector Manish Narnaware to conduct an inquiry into the issue.
In the meantime, Murugan and his wife assaulted Pilla and a case was registered against them at the Palayamkottai police station.
He said the sub-collector who conducted an inquiry directed the sub-registrar to cancel both registration documents as per Section 23 (any parent or senior citizen feels neglected or is denied the basic needs and amenities as promised by the children/relative, then the transferred property can be cancelled and they can seek return of their property transferred) of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. Narnaware handed over the order copy to Pillai on Thursday.
