Social evils still continue in country: SC judge
Madurai: Social problems continue to plague the country even after 72 years of independence, said Supreme Court judge justice A K Sikri on Saturday.
Speaking after releasing the 6th anniversary souvenir of the Kumari Maha Sabha, justice Sikri said that it was disheartening to see that social issues continued in the country, though it had grown economically in the last 72 years. Many people still do not have access to clean drinking water. Crimes against women, sexual abuse, dowry deaths, corruption continue to prevail.
It is time to think of ways to remove these evils from the society and it was important that a government elected by the people came to power every five years, he added.
He also said that democracy is more than 2,500 years old, and it was important to understand it.
Eighty per cent of the countries in the world followed this democratic system. A democratic rule would depend on how the elected representatives are ruling the nation. Full co-operation of the people was important for a democratic system to excel.
Stating that legislature, executive, judiciary and media form the four pillars of democracy, justice Sikri said that media is one of the most important pillars should not have the interference of others.
