PIL wants homeless to be in PMAY scheme: Gaja

Madurai: A public interest litigation (

PIL

) was filed before the Madurai bench of the Madras high court to direct the authorities to include those who lost their homes and accommodation during the cyclone Gaja to be included as beneficiaries under the central government’s Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana- a scheme aimed at providing affordable housing for the urban poor.

The petitioner, A V Thangavel of Thuraiyur, Trichy, a former village panchayat president stated that thousands of people have lost roof above their head during cyclone Gaja in Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts. “People’s livelihood and economy have been severely affected,” the petitioner stated

According to the state government’s report, there are about 64,978 huts fully damaged and 30,352 huts partially damaged in the four districts. In an affidavit filed before the Madras high court, the revenue and disaster management department of the state government stated that a compensation of Rs 10,000 each for fully damaged huts and Rs 4,100 for partially damaged huts during cyclone Gaja will be issued.
