MADURAI: The Madurai bench of the Madras high court ordered notices to be issued to director and controller of legal metrology, Trichy collector and executive engineer of public works department of Trichy cantonment, on a PIL against improper measurement of river sand.
Trichy-based advocate M Rajendran in his PIL stated that at present river sand is being sold as 'unit' (one truck load of sand is 2.25 units of sand).
But it should be sold in terms of kilogram under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009.
The LM Act has been enacted by the central government by repealing two earlier Acts, Standards of Weights and Measures Act, 1976, and Standards of Weights and Measures (Enforcement) Act, 1985, to establish and enforce the standards of weights and measures and to regulate trade and commerce relating to goods which are sold or distributed by weights or measures.
Under this, the state is the only enforcement agency in every state. But, officials are unaware of the act. Hence, a direction to the authorities to enforce the LM Act, 2009 is necessary, the petition said.
The bench ordered notices and posted the matter by two weeks.
