Trichy: Smart parking system was formally introduced in Thillai Nagar main road on Wednesday, and more arterial roads are to be brought under the initiative. Officials said that the system will prevent traffic bottlenecks and generate revenue to the civic body.
Around one km stretch of Thillai Nagar around ninth cross has become a paid parking zone. No parking zones have also been identified near the stretch.
A parking fee of Rs 5 for two-wheelers and Rs 20 for cars per hour, will be collected.
The paid parking will be in effect for at least 12 hours per day. The move, however, has disappointed a section of people since commercial establishments were spared from the collection. “If commercial complexes provide us parking space why would we park our vehicles on the road. Corporation should collect a portion of fee from such commercial outlets,” R Sundar, a resident of Cantonment said.
“CCTV cameras have been installed to ensure the safety of vehicles. Our supervisors will monitor the no parking zones to prevent haphazard parking,” a stakeholder of the project said. Vehicles refusing to vacate the no parking zone will be reported to the traffic police for legal action.
