MADURAI: Tension prevailed at the SS Colony Police Station after police arrested A Abdul Latif, hailing from Thomas Colony, for allegedly molesting a four-year-old girl hailing from the neighbourhood. Police also arrested the 72-year-old accused's second son, Abdul Suvan, on the charges of threatening the victim's family with dire consequences to prevent them from making a police complaint.
Abdul Latif is a retired ticket checker with the Southern Railways, police sources said.
"He took the girl to his house and molested her a couple of days ago. The incident came to light on Tuesday when she complained of pain in her abdomen. She was again taken to the hospital where a scan was taken. It revealed an attempted penetration using fingers, which resulted in bleeding in the private parts. When the family members spoke to the girl, she told them about Abdul Latif," a police officer told TOI.
Based on a complaint from the girl's grandfather Rajakani, a case was registered and inquiries were carried out. Police also questioned Abdul Latif's elder son Abdul Javeed.
Tension prevailed at the police station after a large number of people from the Muslim community gathered there in support of the accused. Police personnel had to close the doors of the station to conduct inquiries with the accused, before formally arresting them.
