Madurai: Commissioner of Madurai corporation Chithra Vijayan inspected the vaccination of 14-year-old girls at the special medical camp to prevent cervical cancer at the Thiruparankundram urban primary health centre on Saturday.Madurai district began administering human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine on Saturday, with a target set to vaccinate 32,655 girls aged 14 under the supervision of doctors at all govt hospitals, govt primary health centres, and urban primary health centres.

The pilot programme of administering the HPV vaccine to 14-year-old girls in four districts to prevent cervical cancer in Tamil Nadu was launched by the chief minister on Jan 27.Cervical cancer caused by HPV infection can be prevented by up to 99.7% through HPV vaccination.Corporation requested that all parents, guardians, school officials, and community leaders utilise this rare opportunity and bring 14-year-old girls to the nearest govt hospitals, govt primary health centres, and urban primary health centres to get them vaccinated with the international-standard HPV vaccine and protect them from cervical cancer.
