TRICHY: The ‘India Against Corruption’ movement is slowly gaining pace, with several residents pouring on to the streets to support
Anna Hazare’s fight against graft. On Sunday, residents formed a human chain along the Cauvery bridge which connects Srirangam with Trichy city.
R Muthukumar, one of the co-ordinators of the Trichy chapter of the movement admitted that the response or support to Anna Hazare-led movement from the city may be lukewarm if compared to other political rallies, but its significance should not be gauged by only numbers.
“Even those who did not participate in the human chain today (Sunday) like our brothers and sisters at home are giving us moral support in the protest,” he said.
He, however, said the support in the fight against corruption will stabilise in the coming days with more people expected to join. Muthukumar also said every time, IAC members sought police permission to hold solidarity meetings, they inevitably asked them whether any VIP would be attending the meet.
“It is a growing movement, and we have planned the second candlelit rally from Gandhi Market to Main Guard Gate, a distance of 3-km on Wednesday,” Muthukumar added.
Last week, Trichy organised a rally expressing solidarity with the Anna Hazare-led movement, followed by a one-day token fast by about 100 persons drawn from various people’s organisations, including Exnora. On Friday, a large number of students participated in a candlelit procession from Srirangam Corporation Park to Ammamandapam.
