Literacy lessons for jail inmates
Madurai: A six-month special literacy programme for prison inmates was launched at Madurai central prison to provide basic literacy and numerical skills to inmates to enable them to lead a better life after release.Officials said 77 inmates including 30 women will undergo the programme launched under the directorate of non-formal and adult education and prison department. It was inaugurated on Tuesday in the presence of D Pazhani, DIG, prisons, Madurai range, and district chief education officer K Karthika. Certificates will be provided to the inmates after they undergo an exam on completion.TNN

The government of Odisha has launched a month-long campaign to test and screen inmates of prisons and closed settings for STI, HIV, tuberculosis, and hepatitis B and C. The campaign will cover 87 prisons and 65 Swadhar Grihas, Ujjwala Homes, drug de-addiction centers, and juvenile homes, reaching over 13,000 inmates.
