Heavy rain continues in Kanyakumari

Madurai: For the second consecutive day, Kanyakumari district administration declared a holiday for schools in the district due to the heavy rain that continued on Wednesday. The district has received 1,417 mm rainfall in 24 hours while Mylaudy recorded 110 mm rainfall by Wednesday morning. Chief minister M K Stalin has condoled the death of three people due to electrocution during the rain and announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to their relatives. Thoppuvilai residents Chithra, 47, her daughter Athira, 23, and son Ashwin, 19 were electrocuted after Ashwin touched a wet wall of the building that was conducting electricity. Stalin expressed his grief to Chithra’s husband Somraj and relatives.Dams in the district are fast filling up with Pechiparai standing at 30 feet of water (capacity 48 feet) while Perunchani dam level was at 57 feet out of its total capacity of 77 feet. These two dams have been receiving inflow of 1,546 and 1,564 cusecs of water by Wednesday morning. Water logging was reported across the district. Mankadu – Munchirai road, Thikkurichi and Suseendram are waterlogged due to heavy flow in the wild streams. Houses were surrounded by flood water in Azhikal Pillaithoppu. As Thirparappu waterfall has swelled, tourists are not allowed to take bath for the second day. The district administration has reported 15 houses damaged due to the rain while nine trees fell in Kalkulam, Agastheeswaram, Thiruvattar and Killikulam taluks. Tangedco employees have been repairing damaged electric poles. Meanwhile, India Meteorological Department predicted light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning at one or two places over Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Karaikal on Thursday. IMD also warned fishermen not to venture into the sea due to wind speed exceeding 55 kmph in the Gulf of Mannar, south Tamil Nadu sea, Comarin sea, South Kerala sea and Lakshadweep island on Wednesday and Thursday.

Kerala: Heavy rain to continue, 10 districts on yellow alert

Several places in Kerala experienced short spells of heavy rainfall, with some areas recording between 6cm and 8cm of rainfall. The India Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall warning for the state until October 3, with several weather systems influencing the rainfall. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are also expected in the coming days. The sea is expected to be rough nearshore along the coast due to high periodswell waves.

Water level in dams low in spite of sudden heavy rains

Despite widespread rain, the water level in dams in Kerala remains low at 53%, compared to 80% last year. This has resulted in a shortage of power generation potential of approximately 1,137mu. The heavy rains have reduced power demands, but it is unlikely to make a significant difference in the power shortage. The cancellation of long-term power purchase agreements has worsened the power crisis, and the government is considering reviving the cancelled agreements.

Heavy rain warning in 14 Odisha districts today

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy rain warnings for 14 districts in Odisha. A low-pressure area formed on Friday has intensified into a well-marked system and is moving towards Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Jharkhand. The IMD has issued an orange warning for five districts and a yellow warning for nine more districts in Odisha. The state government has issued an advisory to district collectors to be on alert. The rainfall is expected to continue until Wednesday.
