Goripalayam flyover opened, to ease traffic in one of city’s busiest corridors
Madurai: The much-anticipated Netaji Subash Chandra Bose flyover was inaugurated on Saturday by chief minister M K Stalin. The 1.3km-long flyover connects Tamukkam Junction with Anna Salai and forms a wing of the Goripalayam flyover project. Designed to ease traffic congestion in one of the city's busiest corridors, the flyover links key localities such as Sellur, Tallakulam, Tamukkam, Nelpettai, and Anna Nagar. The flyover comprises 39 deck slabs and features colourful murals depicting the Chithirai festival and other cultural themes, adding a distinct Madurai touch to the structure. The flyover was officially named after Netaji Subash Chandra Bose on Feb 16, 2026. With its opening, travel time across the Goripalayam stretch and vehicular congestion at the junction is expected to be significantly reduced.
Service roads were also laid alongside the flyover. However, construction debris was not yet cleared, which affected the aesthetics of the structure, commuters said. "The flyover has completely changed the look of Goripalayam from how it used to be. The flyover will be highly beneficial to commuters, but the remaining debris is spoiling its visual appeal," said Visalakshi K, a commuter. She added that after the laying of the service roads, the dust in the area also reduced significantly and urged that the debris must be removed too.The chief minister also inaugurated the Veerapandiya Kattabomman flyover between Thirumangalam and Kalligudi railway stations. The flyover was constructed at a cost of 38 crore as an alternative to the railway level crossing that frequently caused traffic bottlenecks. The crossing was closed nearly 50 times a day due to train movements, resulting in long queues, delays, and inconvenience for commuters, particularly those travelling between Thirumangalam and Madurai airport. The new flyover aims to address this issue and was built with a total length of approximately 582m and comprises 14 deck slabs, to ensure safety for commuters. In Dec, the chief minister inaugurated the Melamadai flyover named after freedom fighter Velu Nachiyar.
