Food pipe cancer treated

Apollo Cancer Centres has said it has successfully treated a 28-year-old man diagnosed with oesophageal cancer using trimodality therapy and keyhole surgery.

MADURAI: Apollo Cancer Centres has said it has successfully treated a 28-year-old man diagnosed with oesophageal cancer using trimodality therapy and keyhole surgery.
Dr Balu Mahendra, surgical oncologist, said the man was unable to swallow food and was diagnosed with food pipe cancer. He said video assisted thoracoscopic surgery was used for removing the cancer tumour.

“He was able to breathe, talk and perform his daily activities without pain the next day and was discharged within a week,” he added. In the case of open surgery, there would be severe post-operative pain, lung infection and complications.
Radiation oncologist Dr Sathish Srinivasan said the patient underwent radiation therapy and chemotherapy for four weeks, followed by microscopic surgery.
