Driver booked for dumping sewage into rainwater drain

Madurai: Police have booked the driver of a private tanker lorry for repeated dumping of sewage water into rainwater drains near Mattuthavani bus stand in the city.Based on a complaint from an assistant engineer of the Madurai corporation, the Mattuthavani police registered a case against the driver under sections 278 (making the atmosphere noxious to health), 291 (repeating public nuisance despite warning from the lawful authority) of the IPC. The tanker lorry belonged to Sigaram Septic Tank Company in Madurai.Corporation officials recently warned the owner of the septic tank company and the truck driver to not dump sewage water illegally into rainwater drains near Mattuthavani bus stand as it can cause harm to residents and passengers. As the illegal activity persisted, the corporation has filed the police complaint.This is the second time in the past week that a private tanker lorry driver was booked for dumping sewage water collected from soak pits and septic tanks into storm water drains in Mattuthavani. The corporation has allowed private tankers to dump sewage water only at pumping stations at Mundri Thoppu, Sellur, M K Puram, Santhapettai, Jaihindpuram, Muthupatti and Vellaikal dumpyard.
