Madurai/Trichy: Noisy speakers of candidates which used to go on till 10 pm were turned off at 6 pm on Thursday as curtains came down on the campaign for the urban civic body polls to be held on Saturday. However, passive campaigns continued in digital mode in the forms of advertisement on websites and social media.
Candidates got into top gear on Thursday, not missing an opportunity to strike a chord with traders and locals by settling for photo-ops and greeting people as they raced to cover the entire ward one last time.
While candidates were campaigning in one part of the ward, cadres emphasised the candidate’s name, party symbol and other information through loudspeakers on autorickshaws.
DMK candidates K Kalaiselvi in ward 51 and R Muthukumar in ward 10 of Trichy corproation were seen making dosa and preparing dosa batter in their respective wards. Ministers K N Nehru and Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi campaigned together for DMK candidates. Senior BJP leader H Raja who was campaigning for BJP candidate S Govindarajan in ward 2 of Srirangam ran into K N Nehru who was campaigning for Congress candidate V Jawahar and exchanged greetings. In Madurai corporation, cadres of parties split into smaller teams to distribute handbills with images of the party symbol, candidate and serial number in the EVM. A festive spirit gripped the campaigns as they were accompanied by bands and blaring speakers.
