2 workers killed in blast at firecracker unit in Tamil Nadu’s Theni
Theni firecracker unit blast kills 2 workers in Cumbum
THENI: Two workers were killed in a blast at a firecracker unit in Cumbum in the Theni district.The deceased were identified as Dinesh, alias Deena, 23, and Surya Prabhu, 21, both hailing from Cumbum.According to police sources, a firecracker unit was running at Kattupallivasal Street in Cumbum.At around 9.30 am on Saturday, the deceased workers reportedly opened a chemical mixing room within the unit after a week of nonoperation. The room which was meant to open slowly was reportedly opened faster, which triggered a sudden blast.Resulting in the immediate death of two workers, and none were injured.Upon information, the police, fire and rescue personnel from Uthamapalayam and Cumbum stations rushed to the spot and doused the fire in 30 minutes.A case was registered by Cumbum North Police, and further investigation is underway.Preliminary investigation says it's a licensed firework unit named "Lakshmi Fireworks," and the unit had a license in the name Muthulakshmi.Police recovered the bodies and sent it to Theni Government Medical College Hospital for autopsy.It is recalled a blast in a firecracker manufacturing unit at Kattanarpatti in Virudhunagar on Sunday (April 19) claimed the lives of 25 and left six injured.
