LUDHIANA: The stage events of inter-college Youth Festival at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) kick-started on Wednesday, marking the diamond jubilee year celebrations of the varsity. A spirited cultural procession based on the theme of ‘Rangla Punjab’ was taken out by the participating colleges.
A panorama of various sub-themes covering issues of natural resource conservation, prohibition of plastic use, role of freedom fighters, folk legends, secularism, unity in diversity, and crop residue management – all intertwined in Punjab's history and current status, was presented at the fest.
Several vices that have crept into the society like drug abuse, western influence, brain drain and peer pressure to own modern gadgetry were also highlighted with an aim to regain the lost glory of the state.
Addressing the huge gathering at the Dr A S Khera Open Air Theatre of PAU, chief guest Kultar Singh Sandhwan, speaker of Punjab Legislative Assembly, talked about the need of reviving Punjabi culture.
Satbir Singh Gosal, vice-chancellor of PAU said, “Youth festival opens before the students, new vistas of competition and, at the same time, shows the strength of camaraderie, the pleasure of participation, and the satisfaction of being part of one of the largest celebrations of their student life.”
Speaking about PAU’s diamond jubilee celebrations, Gosal informed that the varsity’s six decades in the pursuit of excellence in teaching, research, and extension would be showcased in a series of events, all year round.
The College of Community Science bagged the first position in the cultural procession. While Jashandeep from the College of Agriculture topped in solo dance, Sumita Bhalla from the College of Community Science stood first in solo song. The post-lunch session featured music events like western solo, western group, light vocal solo, and group song (Indian) at the amphitheatre.
