Shopkeepers fret as rain disrupts road repair work

Ludhiana: While the shopkeepers in the Model Town gole market were relieved after the much-awaited road reconstruction was finally taken up in the area, the rainfall in the city played spoilsport and left them perturbed.On Tuesday, Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) chairman Tarsem Bhinder inspected the ongoing work in the market which was hindered due to rainfall in the afternoon. While the shopkeepers claimed that work being undertaken during rainfall would impact the strength of road, the LIT chairman said the work was halted when it was raining. A shopkeeper from the gole market, Arvind Sharma, complained that the road reconstruction work was going on despite the surface of road being wet due to rainfall in the area for past few days. He said the road would not survive for long and the area residents and shopkeepers would again be subjected to bumpy rides.Meanwhile, the LIT chairman claimed that the authorities concerned will ensure timely and quality repair work as people were eagerly waiting. He said the work had earlier got delayed due to rain and now when they had finally initiated it, rain was still proving to be a hindranceNotably, the road repair work in Gole market had become a major issue after an activist moved the Punjab State Human Rights Commission which had then asked the MC commissioner to give justification for delay in work. LIT yet to start Gole mkt work

The Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) has not yet started the revamp work of the roads in Gole market, despite being warned by former Congress councillor, Parvinder Lapran. Lapran had threatened a vigilance inquiry if the work was not started within 48 hours. The LIT blamed the weather for the delay and promised to begin the recarpeting of the road on Wednesday. The condition of the roads in Gole market has been a longstanding issue for commuters.

Rain, road work bring morning traffic to crawl

Kolkata experienced heavy traffic congestion due to factors like morning drizzle, damaged roads, vehicle breakdowns, and disrupted metro services. The worst congestion was observed between Park Circus and Exide. The police acknowledged the delays but denied insufficient deployment. Two consecutive vehicle breakdowns on AJC Bose Flyover worsened the congestion. Traffic authorities adjusted the signaling system on primary roads to accommodate damaged road conditions. In other news, police in Coimbatore are seizing vehicles parked on roads for more than 10 days, and several areas in Lucknow faced waterlogging causing inconvenience to people. Over 62 roads remain blocked in Himachal Pradesh, causing traffic jams on the Chandigarh-Manali highway.

Kolkata: Rain-battered Salt Lake roads cry for repairs ahead of festivities

Several roads in Salt Lake, Kolkata have deteriorated due to continuous rain, with potholes and craters causing inconvenience to motorists. The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has yet to begin patchwork, despite receiving letters from the police urging them to repair the roads. Residents are frustrated with the repeated promises of the civic authorities and the lack of action. The authorities have cited a shortage of funds as the reason for the delay. However, they plan to carry out patchwork before the festive season and allocate funds for major repairs after the puja.
