LUDHIANA: The city traffic police will soon start providing immediate help to commuters when their vehicles breakdown on city roads by sending a nearby mechanic to attend to the problem.
A database of these mechanics will be prepared and the operators on traffic helpline (1073) will send the nearest mechanic after confirming the location of the vehicle breakdown.
The service is expected to benefit those who are not well commuted on and around city roads.
Residents expect the initiative will help them a great deal in times of emergency.
BRS Nagar resident Harish Kumar said almost every commuter experiences such an emergency at least once when the vehicle breaks down in an unfamiliar area. “This service is one of the basic facilities a city should have,” he added.

Suresh Sharma said people have to at times leave their vehicle on the road when it breaks out in the middle of no where at night, but this service will save them of such trouble and risk.
Sarbaha Nagar resident Jaspreet Singh said, “I once had to call my brother when my car broke down at an isolated spot on Chandigarh Road. Such an initiative was needed in the city.”
Meanwhile, the traffic department identifying motor mechanics on Ferozepur Road, Chandigarh Road and Delhi Road.
