LUDHIANA: A notorious criminal, Kartik Baggan, who was facing multiple FIRs, was shot dead by bike-borne assailants near Sundar Nagar Chowk late on Saturday night. His friend Sarvan, who was accompanying him, also suffered a bullet injury but managed to survive, while Kartik died on the spot.
Police said Kartik and Sarvan were riding a scooter near the chowk when unidentified assailants opened fire from behind.
Kartik sustained four bullet injuries, which led to his death, while Sarvan received a single gunshot wound.
Kartik Baggan was a member of the Puneet Bains gang, involved in several cases of murder, robbery, extortion and violations under the Arms Act.
A few years ago, Kartik had also been shot at by his rivals on Benjamin Road but had survived that attack.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (North) Davinder Chaudhary said that, according to Sarvan, the attackers fired from behind, making it difficult to identify them.
Police have launched an investigation into the case.
