Honor killing: Woman shot dead by brother in Ludhiana, husband injured

LUDHIANA: Fumed over his sister for eloping from the house with their worker and solemnizing marriage with him, son of a realtor cum financer opened at least 20 fires at the newlywed couple in Panchsheel colony on Saturday night. The woman died on the spot after suffering multiple bullet injuries, while the man has been admitted to the hospital whose condition is stated to be out of danger.


After the honor killing, the accused surrendered before the police. The cops arrested the accused, identified as Sooraj Singh of Basant Nagar, and recovered a .32 bore country made illegal pistol, 2 magazines, 21 live cartridges from his possession, besides 18 bullet shells were recovered from the spot.

The deceased woman has been identified as Sandeep Kaur, 28 who had eloped with Ravi Kumar, 25, a resident of Panchsheel Colony.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police- III Shubham Agarwal said that the accused Sooraj’s father Bhupinder Singh Soma is a financier and realtor. The victim Ravi Kumar was working for Soma in his finance business, for the past many years. Ravi was quite close to the family and therefore would often visit their house. Gradually, Ravi and Sandeep fell in love. The duo eloped from the house on July 21 and solemnized marriage on July 29.

After solemnizing marriage Sandeep and Ravi returned to the latter’s house on July 29. However the duo did not contact Sandeep’s family, as they were aware that they would be upset with them. Meanwhile Sooraj felt that Sandeep’s step of marrying their employee has caused them embarrassment in the society and he hatched a plan to kill them.

Assistant Commissioner of Police- West Mandeep Singh added, on Saturday night Ravi was standing outside his house when Sooraj reached there on a bike, wearing a helmet. He fired one gun shot at Ravi and the bullet pierced through his lips. Ravi rushed inside the house to save his life however Sooraj kept on firing at him. Sooraj then followed Ravi inside the house. There, he fired several fires at his sister Sandeep who died on the spot, meanwhile Ravi hid himself in the house.

"While leaving from there Sooraj removed his helmet and told Ravi’s mother, who is an eye witness of this incident, that he has taken revenge from his sister Sandeep and Ravi who had caused them embarrassment", added ACP.

With the help of neighbours, Ravi was rushed to the hospital where he is undergoing treatment. Ravi has suffered five bullet injuries.
