Ludhiana: The special investigation team (SIT) probing the allegations of sexual harassment against Indian hockey team skipper Sardar Singh has given a clean chit to him stating that the "charges were wrong".

Ashap Kaur Bhogal, an Indian-origin British woman who is a former under-19 hockey player in England, had accused Sardar of sexual assault. In February, she accused the veteran midfielder of "mentally, physically and emotionally torturing" her. The 21-year-old had claimed that Sardar, whom she met during the 2012 Olympics and has been engaged to him for four years, forced her to abort their child in 2015.

After a formal complaint, an SIT - comprising additional DCP Satvir Atwal, ACP Gurpreet Purewal and SHO of Koomkalan police station - was set up to probe the matter. It recently submitted its report to Ludhiana police commissioner Jatinder Singh Aulakh after three months. Confirming this, Aulakh said, "The allegations could not be established. The complainant had stated she and Sardar Singh stayed at Bhaini Sahib, but that was found untrue."
