LUDHIANA: The baseball team of Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines have proved that they have their game pitched right. For a second time in a row, the team lifted the overall trophy at the inter-college baseball tournament of Panjab University.
Soaking in the victory, the winners are already gearing up for the upcoming inter-university clash.
Six members of the squad - Raj Rani Rajjo, Sandeep Kaur, Amanjeet Kaur, Amandeep Kaur, Amanjot Kaur and Ruby Bala - have been selected for the inter-university baseball meet that would be held soon.
Coached by Harbir Singh Gill and Sukhdev Singh Aulakh, Khalsa college beat Guru Nanak Khalsa College, Ludhiana, by 9-5, Ramgarhia College by 12-2 and Panjab University team by 13-1.
Pitcher of winning team and one of the stars at the tournament Sandeep said she is delighted by her team's success. "We were practising very hard for long hours in the college so that we could win the trophy. It was a knock out competition and our team gave its best from the first match,'' said Sandeep. However, her dream is far from fulfilled. "My desire is that like other games, baseball should flourish in our country. I also want to reach the international level so that like my city, my country can also be proud,'' she said.
The team's captain and international baseball player Diljeet Kaur said her team was very energetic and played with proper coordination. "We have appealed to the state government and sports authorities to promote baseball in the city. Despite bad infrastructure we are being able to do well so if there is a proper support system, players will definitely do better and make the country proud,'' she said.
Coach Harbir Singh said the college team is one of the best in the state and has been a consistent performer. "The girls are dedicated to the game and focus all their energy to winning,'' he said.
