Mau DM Gyan Tripathi said, “The situation is under control. However, Internet services have been suspended to check rumour-mongering.” Six companies of PAC and additional forces from neighbouring Azamgarh and Ballia districts have been dispatched to maintain law and order, district officials said.

“A group of 150 students had assembled at Sadar crossing to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act on Monday evening,” ADG (Varanasi zone) Braj Bhushan told TOI.“While the students were dispersing after the protest, someone in the crowd hurled a stone at a car. Seeing the car surrounded by mob, cops used mild force to disperse protesters. However, the students got agitated and started pelting cops with stones,” Bhushan added.

The protesters chased the cops and set three motorcycles on fire. Police fired teargas shells to control the mob.

Senior officers were informed about the development and force from six other police stations rushed to the spot to control the situation. ADG clarified that no curfew has been imposed while the DM and the SP were on the spot to monitor the situation.
