Sumit's roommate and classmates lodged a complaint in the proctor office on Wednesday that he was upset over not being awarded the sessional marks even after submitting his assignment. In a letter to the proctor office, the teacher said the student failed to submit the assignment, hence was not awarded the marks.

On finding Sumit's note in the room, his roommate and classmates tried to find him. On failing to locate him they contacted principal Ratan Kumar late night who asked the students to inform police. "When no efforts were made by the college till morning, we staged a protest at Arts College and later lodged a complaint in the proctor's office," said
