Three youths drown in Ghaghara in Bahraich; NDRF roped in to recover bodies
Bahraich: Three youths drowned in the Ghaghara river in Bahraich district after being swept into deep water while bathing near Kodhwa village in the Munsari area of Mehsi tehsil. All three bodies were recovered on Friday, officials said.
The incident occurred around 2pm on Thursday when five friends went to the river for a swim. The group was identified as Golu Jaiswal (22), Suraj Jaiswal (19), Mohit Yadav (25), Rajkumar (24) and Shivam Singh (22). During bathing, they inadvertently moved into a deeper stretch of the river and began struggling in the current.
Villagers who were present nearby rushed to help and started rescue efforts immediately. They managed to pull Rajkumar and Shivam Singh to safety, but Golu, Suraj and Mohit were swept away and disappeared under the water.
Police reached the spot soon after receiving information and began a search operation with the assistance of local divers. The body of Golu Jaiswal was recovered late Thursday evening.
Search efforts continued through the night for the remaining two missing youths. On Friday afternoon, a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team joined the operation and recovered the bodies of Suraj Jaiswal and Mohit Yadav from the river.
Hardi Police Station SHO Alok Singh supervised the operation along with police personnel. Superintendent of Police Bishwajit Shrivastava said all three bodies were sent for post-mortem examinations.
The deaths have triggered mourning in the area, with families and residents gathering near the riverbank and at the victims’ homes as news of the recoveries spread.
