VARANASI: In a sensational incident, dreaded criminal and a Munna Bajrangi gang sharp-shooter Anurag Tripathi alias Annu Tripathi was allegedly shot dead by a fellow prisoner and murder accused Santosh Gupta alias Kittu in the Central Jail here on Friday. The weapon used in the killing was reportedly found in a main hole in the jail premises.
Besides departmental inquiry, a magisterial probe has also been ordered into the matter.
The alleged killer was being interrogated by the police, and in view of the seriousness of the matter, an extensive search was on in the jail premises in presence of senior officers, including divisional commissioner CN Dubey, DIG RN Singh Yadav, district magistrate Nitishwar Kumar and SSP SN Sabat.
According to reports, Anuu was lodged at barrack number 2-A in circle number-3 of the Central jail. Santosh, a native of Jaddu Mandi, who had been in the jail for last one year, was lodged at barrack number 1. He reportedly went to Annu''s barrack and shot him around 10.30 am.
The incident exposed the security arrangements in the Central jail. Later, the government suspended seven jail officials, including senior jail superintendent SK Sharma.
