Sambhal Violence: State congress leaders accuse UP govt of putting them under house arrest
LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh Congress leaders on Monday accused the Yogi Adityanath led BJP government of putting them under house arrest in order to prevent them from heading to violence hit Sambhal.
The congress had announced that it would go to meet the violence hit families in Sambhal last week. They had also sought permission from the local administration in this regard. However, the permission was denied on the ground that section 163 of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita had been imposed in the district.
A party spokesperson said that at around 9.30 am, representatives of the Lucknow Police issued a notice to Congress state president Ajay Rai asking them not to visit violence-hit Sambhal.
“In the notice given to Ajay Rai, he has been informed that keeping in mind the peace and communal sensitivity in Sambhal district, he should cooperate in the public interest and postpone his proposed program so that the order passed by the District Magistrate of Sambhal district, Section 163 BNSS is not violated,” the spokesperson said.
Speaking to TOI, state president Ajay Rai said: “Heavy police has been deployed outside my residence and also UP Congress headquarters only to prevent us from heading to Sambhal. We are the voice of opposition in India but are being treated like criminals.”
Rai questioned the police action stating: “Why is the BJP government so afraid? It is our democratic right to reach Sambhal and meet the people there and try to establish peace, yet we are being stopped, why?”
Congress leader Aradhana Mishra Mona said that the BJP was behaving in an autocratic manner, but it never be able to curb the voice of the opposition. “The incident in violence is not an ordinary one. We wanted to go for fact finding and also to appeal the people of the district. The permission has been denied. But why have the government put us under house arrest?” she questioned.
