PRATAPGARH: A day after Uttar Pradesh police arrested Uday Pratap Singh and slapped the Pota on him and his son, Independent jailed MLA Raja Bhaiya, his wife on Sunday wrote to the President and the Supreme Court alleging persecution by the state government.
In letter written to President A P J Abdul Kalam, the apex court and the NHRC, Raja Bhaiya''s mother Manjul Raje alleged that the state police has been persecuting her family ever since her son along with some others withdrew support to the Mayawati government.
She claimed that her husband Uday Pratap Singh had been implicated in false cases. The police "conspired" to arrest her husband by "planting explosives and cartridges in his house", she alleged.
"The police have taken possession of articles of domestic use and vehicles during a series of raids conducted in our houses here and at Lucknow," Manjul Raje claimed.
Uday Pratap Singh was arrested from his residence here on Saturday on the basis of a non-bailable warrant issued against him in 1993. The district police claimed that an AK 56 rifle, its cartridges and a large quantity of explosives were recovered from Singh''s possession. The administration later slapped the Pota on Singh and his MLA son.
Raja Bhaiya along with a group of 10 Independent MLAs had withdrawn support to the BSP-BJP coalition government after the Cabinet expansion in September 2002 after which he was arrested on charges of threatening a BJP legislator.
