allahabad: over 100 nurses resorted to a day-long dharna and fast at the srn hospital here on monday, protesting the non-removal of chief sister tutor bani arora, who is in the eye of a controversy regarding alleged sexual exploitation of trainees. fifty-four trainee nurses had submitted written complaints against arora's coercing them into stripping and entertaining her friends at her official residence close at night.
the trainees also accused the chief sister tutor of extorting money from them on pretext of hostel services like club money, uniform money, mess fees, residential fees, etc. adm (revenue) ms himanshu singh conducted a detailed inquiry, into the allegations on monday, ordered by the district magistrate, from 11 a.m. onwards and recorded the statements of their parents and ms arora. the probe was still going on till the filing of this report. parents of traumatised trainees from all over the state thronged the chief medical superintendent's (cms) office here, where the probe is being conducted. gayatri devi, resident of shiv kuti told the times news network that her daughter had been persistently complaining of physical and mental harassment at arora's hands right from day one of her admission 10 months ago. when she dared protest, she ended up by being thoroughly victimised. maine sab kuch saaf-saaf adm sahiba ko bata diya hai. itna buri-buri gaali deti hai meri beti ko, ki kya koi goonda dega. ranjit k valmik, a graduate and resident of gopiganj area in bhadohi district, was also present at the inquiry. he said his sister had also been assaulted by arora for protesting excessive demands for cash. a visibly disturbed and helpless ranjit said: don't know what will happen. it is no longer safe to keep my sister at the school. (pata nahin kya hoga. (ab to meri bahen ko is college mein rakhna surakshit nahin hai). his sister, terrified of arora's midnight guests, is loathe to stay back at the hostel. suresh kumar, president of the local isd college students union, whose own sister- in-laws are at the nursing hostel, threatened to involve the students' union if arora did not immediately move out. he warned that the responsibility for consequences will rest with the district administration as well as the medical education minister n k s gaur, whose own constituency is a witness to such sordid incidents. on being contacted bani arora, asserted that the medical college principal did not posses the authority to issue attachment orders. while the complaint letter was dated october 3, cms v k koyal, received the same on november 11. where was the complaint pending the two dates, arora asked. arora said that if the probe was initiated against her, then her version should have been taken, as against an ex-parte decision. however, the issue seems set to snowball into a major crisis. sujit banerjee, principal secretary, medical, health and family welfare, luckow, was not available for comment.
