LUCKNOW: A seven-year-old girl was found strangled to death under suspicious circumstances at her residence in Khundari Bazaar, under the Kaiserbagh police station area of Lucknow, early Tuesday morning.
Police have detained the child's mother, Roshni Khan, and her live-in partner, Udit Jaiswal, also the woman's estranged husband Shahrukh Khan for questioning.
According to police, the child had been living with her father, Shahrukh Khan, after Roshni separated from him and began residing with Udit.
On Monday night, Roshni visited Shahrukh’s residence to meet her daughter. An argument reportedly broke out between the estranged couple, during which the child was strangled, the police said.
Soon after the incident, Roshni dialed the emergency number 112 and claimed that Shahrukh had murdered their daughter. However, when police arrived and began questioning, her statements were found to be inconsistent and contradictory.
She kept changing her version of events, prompting investigators to dig deeper.
Deputy commissioner of police, West Zone, Vishwajeet Srivastava, said that initial findings pointed to strangulation as the cause of death.
“While the mother initially accused her estranged husband, but probe is ongoing to know exact sequence of events,” he said.
Inspector Anjani Kumar Mishra of Kaiserbagh police station, who is leading the probe, confirmed that all three — Roshni, Shahrukh, and Udit — were taken into custody for interrogation. “The role of the mother is under serious scrutiny.
The girl’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination," he said.
Police said that once the autopsy report is received and forensic evidence is examined, appropriate legal action will follow.
A murder case has been registered and further investigation is underway to reconstruct the full sequence of events and establish criminal liability.
