Lucknow: It is mandatory for jewellers to issue a receipt with the central excise registered number stamped on it for the additional duty charged. Commissioner for central excise Ajay Dixit said on Monday that all jewellers with annual turnover above Rs 6 crore will have to be registered with the central excise department and levy a duty of 1% on every transaction, with effect from March 1 as per the

Union Budget

2016-17. The duty is applicable on all items of jewellery except silver ornaments that are not studded with precious stones.

As the jewellers' strike in

the middle

of the wedding season demanding rollback of the 1% excise levy entered the 16th day, association of computer traders joined the chorus.

"Markets will remain close till our demand to roll back the additional tax is fulfilled. Around 3,200 jewellers from the city and 12,000 from the state are going to Delhi for the nationwide rally on March 17. Computer traders have joined us in our demand," said Adeesh Jain, organising secretary of Lucknow Sarrafa Association. "Government wants us to share all our sale records and the problem is that majority of jewellers are not literate enough even to keep accounts," he added.
