IIT-K prof bags JC Bose Fellowship

Lucknow: Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur’s (IIT-K) Professor Nitin Saxena from the department of computer science and engineering (CSE) has been awarded the prestigious JC Bose Fellowship of the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Department of Science and Technology. The fellowship has been awarded in recognition to Saxena’s contributions to computational complexity theory, algebra, geometry and number theory. He joins the ranks of over 17 faculty members from IIT-K who have received the fellowship in the past. As a JC Bose Fellow, he will receive a fellowship of Rs 25,000 per month and a research grant of Rs 15 lakh per annum for five years. The tenure of the fellowship may be extended for another 5 years based on assessment. Saxena was also elected a fellow of the prestigious Indian National Science Academy for 2024. He was also awarded the IIT Bombay International Award for Excellence in Research in Engineering and Technology for 2023. He is now an elected Fellow in all the four national academies in science and engineering.Saxena has collaborated with Prof Manindra Agrawal and Dr Neeraj Kayal to co-author a seminal paper titled 'PRIMES is in P,' introducing the AKS Primality test, with 'AKS' standing for Agrawal-Kayal-Saxena. Experts worldwide hailed this algorithm for its elegance and effectiveness in primality testing.His remarkable work earned him prestigious accolades in the fields of theoretical computer science and discrete mathematics, including the Gödel Prize 2006 and Fulkerson Prize 2006. In 2018, he bagged the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in mathematical sciences at an age of 37. Currently, he is an N Rama Rao Chair Professor in the CSE and is the founding coordinator of Centre for Developing Intelligent Systems.

CSIR-NIO Director Receives Prestigious JC Bose Fellowship

Professor Sunil Kumar Singh, director of Goa-based CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), has been awarded the prestigious JC Bose Fellowship for his exceptional contributions to scientific expertise. With specializations in Geochemistry, Palaeoclimate, and Nutrient Cycling, Singh has published over 75 papers and mentored 10 PhD students. The JC Bose Fellowship recognizes active scientists who have excelled in their respective fields, making it a highly sought-after recognition in the scientific community.

3 Cusat students get Norwegian fellowship

Three students from Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) in Kochi have been awarded a visiting fellowship by the Research Council of Norway. As part of the fellowship, the students will spend two months at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The fellowship is given as a component of an international project on image-based diagnosis. The students will receive funding of Rs 2 lakh and Rs 4 lakh respectively.

HC halts Hry selection for 1,600 computer science PGTs

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has halted the selection process for post-graduate teachers (PGTs) in Haryana due to flaws in the educational qualifications set by the Haryana Public Service Commission. The state needs approval from the National Council for Teacher Education to proceed with the selections. In the meantime, the court has ordered the state to refrain from holding subject knowledge tests for PGT (computer science) positions. The selection process affected around 1,600 PGT (computer science) posts.
