allahabad: the university of allahabad has a sanctioned post of librarian whose pay scale is on par with a professor. but for over a decade the university administration has not been able to appoint a full time librarian which is being carried on by honorary librarians who are appointed from time to time. the result is that students and teachers in general suffer as they fail to obtain desired books of their subjects.
either books are not there and if they are, they are missing from the shelves or misplaced, allege stu dents attending the library. kashi vidyapeeth recently received a grant of rs. 25 lakh for its library from the university grants commission (ugc). why should the over a century old allahabad university be deprived of such grants from the ugc, questions a senior executive councillor. the post of librarian is a full time one. professors who are made honorary librarian work part-time as they have to be in their departments as well. university realises library fees from the students whose interests suffer. vice-chancellor g k mehta will complete a one-year term on march 18 this year. he is busy bringing the university back on rails and a vision paper for the university. but he has over looked one major part of meetings teachers and students for feed back fixing a time, say 4 p.m. to 5 p m, for listening to their grievances or suggestions, if any. he should be brief, but do meet them without any binding of previous appointment, as is done by all officers, it is pointed out. one cannot conceive of a university without a well-managed library. similarly, one cannot conceive of a university without registrar, who is the keeper of the university records. for the past six months the university is without a registrar and the work of registrar is being executed by the controller of examina tions a n seth, much to the chagrin of students. the government meanwhile appointed three registrars who could not join their duty. some time back prof mehta had said that action had been initiated for having a new registrar who is yet to come. the executive council which should meet every month on first saturday has not met since november last. there is an allegation that prof. mehta was ignoring the executive council which was not being properly briefed on the steps being taken for improvements in the university. the executive council being the appointing authority of teachers at its earlier meeting had decided in principle that it was empowered to take action against teachers who indulged in private coaching and were not regular in taking classes. nothing has been done on this score. the combined effect of all these is that the student interests are suffering for which the university adminis tration should be made accountable, say many. there is a demand that the executive council should meet regularly every month and its public relations section should every month organise news conferences to brief the press on future plans and hurdles in smooth running of the university. since fees in the university, including hostels, had been increased mani fold, efforts should be made to create an atmosphere conducive to serious study and research, it is demanded.
