LUCKNOW: A 42-year-old mango grower allegedly ended his life at his house around 1 am on Sunday following the loss of crop caused by the storm that lashed the city on Saturday. The incident took place in the Rahimabad police station area located on the city outskirts near Malihabad.

The man identified as Sushil Singh aka Anna was hanging from the ceiling of a room with a plastic rope tied around his neck. Police sent the body for postmortem and an investigation is underway. Police suspect Sushil ended his life due to mental stress.

"Initial investigation show Sushil had bought a pickup van for business but could not repay its loan. He planned to pay it off with profits from selling mangoes but the thunderous storm on Saturday destroyed the standing crop. The family said he wept bitterly at the loss seeing the mangoes lying on the ground in the grove," said SHO, Rahimabad, Akhtiyar Ahmad Ansari. He added that post mortem report of Sushil Singh was awaited.

The family said they were resting in the night on Saturday. A little later Sushil went to the verandah and around 1 am, when one of her daughters woke up for a sip of water, she found him hanging.

Ansari said Sushil is survived by his wife Gayatri Singh (38), and three daughters Shriji (12), Shanvi (9) and Kavya Singh.
