DSR tech for paddy crop amid weak monsoon fears
Lucknow: Amid India Meteorological Department predictions of a below-normal monsoon and irregular rainfall in 2026, attributed to the El Niño effect, state govt has initiated the direct seeded rice (DSR) technique for paddy cultivation in the Kharif season.
The technique saves 15% to 20% of water and allows the crop to mature 15 to 20 days earlier, thereby providing ample time for the subsequent Rabi crop, UP agriculture department officials said on Saturday.
The department said it launched the Kharif Campaign 2026 with a specialised strategy, keeping in view the challenges posed by climate change and a potentially weak monsoon. The State Govt’s primary objective is to encourage farmers to adopt weather-based agricultural techniques, water conservation measures, and farming practices focused on pulses and oilseeds, with the aim of setting new benchmarks in food grain production even amidst adverse conditions.
In fact, state govt has set target of increasing Kharif crops and oilseed production to almost 30.25 Million Tonnes, which would be almost 20% from last year when 25.65 MT of Kharif food grain and oilseed were produced.
Additional director, agriculture, A K Pathak told TOI that increased production would be based on techniques envisaging higher production and an enhanced acreage in the upcoming season.
Regarding preparations for the Kharif season, officials said that the agriculture department was ensuring the timely provision of certified seeds, fertilisers, and technical training to farmers.
Through the organisation of farmers’ seminars extending down to the Gram Panchayat level, farmers are being provided with information on drought management, crop diversification, and soil conservation, the department said in a statement.
Under the Central Govt’s ‘Khet Bachao’ (Save the Farm) campaign, farmers are being advised to utilise fertilisers strictly on the basis of soil test results.
To make the state self-reliant in the production of pulses, oilseeds, and millets, farmers will be provided with free mini-kits and subsidised seeds in a timely manner. As a matter of fact, the govt currently holds an adequate stock of improved seeds, fertilisers, and agro-chemicals. Farmers are urged to avail themselves of these facilities and adopt innovative technologies to enhance their crop productivity and achieve economic empowerment, officials said.
