After 28-year trial, hotel staff gets jail for adulteration

Additional chief judicial magistrate Richa Joshi on Friday sentenced food and beverage assistant of Hotel Gomti, Chandan Singh Bora, with two years’ jail term and imposed Rs 5 lakh fine on him for selling adulterated food items in the hotel 28 years ago.

LUCKNOW: Additional chief judicial magistrate Richa Joshi on Friday sentenced food and beverage assistant of Hotel Gomti, Chandan Singh Bora, with two years’ jail term and imposed Rs 5 lakh fine on him for selling adulterated food items in the hotel 28 years ago. Another accused, the then general manager ID Mishra, died during trial whereas the third accused, Rajesh Upadhyay, is still facing trial.

Food inspector KM Srivastava had raided the hotel on May 27, 1987 and collected samples of besan and chana daal. The sample report which came on July 3, 1987 revealed adulteration in the food items. A case was later filed under Food Adulteration Act.
