LUCKNOW: Traffic came to a standstill at Hanuman Setu on Friday when 52-year-old
Rajesh Verma, jumped into Gomti river, reportedly to gain sympathy of his wife. Verma works as a security guard at a private school in Gomtinagar and had a heated argument with his wife earlier in the day.
Though Verma and his wife had spats frequently, the matter turned worse on Friday as Verma thrashed his wife and also broke furniture.
Thinking he might get into trouble, Verma decided to plunge into the river to gain sympathy of his wife. An official of Wazirganj police station under whose jurisdiction the case was reported, said, "If Verma really wanted to attempt suicide, he would have jumped in the deep waters instead of plunging towards the corner where the water level is barely knee-deep."
Meanwhile, the police called the family members of Verma. "We will decide whether to book Verma for attempting suicide or not after meeting his wife and other family members," said Aslam Khan, in-charge of Wazirganj police station.
