LUCKNOW: In a first for King George’s Medical University, a 22-year-old man underwent a sex-change surgery and became a woman after an eight-hour-long procedure.
The Kushinagar resident, who used to call himself a woman trapped inside a man’s body, was due to be discharged on Thursday as a woman.
Doctors from the plastic surgery department will monitor her over the next few months, as she continues the intake of oral hormones.
While the youth has got a vagina, the oral hormones will help her develop breasts and grow hair on the face and body like a woman.
She will be studied by the department for her quotient of happiness and adjustment when she moves back into society as a young woman.
However, she will not be able to bear children, as reproductive organs like the uterus and fallopian tubes cannot be transplanted.
The youth had sought help from KGMU’s plastic surgery department two years ago. The head of the department, Prof AK Singh, said, “We first sent him to the psychiatry department for counselling. After we were fully convinced that his decision was not one in haste and that he was wholly convinced of what he was getting into with all the side effects, wefinally went ahead. We also told him that he would not be able to bear children as a woman.”
Before the surgery, conducted on May 8, the youth was kept on hormone medicines for eight months.
He added, “We have not transplanted ovaries, uterus or other reproductive organs because that would include intake of immunosuppressants or anti-rejection drugs that are to be taken life-long. They also have their own effects and are used in life-threatening situations, whichwas not the case here.”
