Months after son’s death, couple found hanging in Kasaragod
Kasaragod: Grief stricken by the death of their only son in a train accident a few months ago, a couple allegedly died by suicide in Kasaragod on Friday. The deceased were identified as Venugopal Nair (50), of Paramba in Poinachi, and his wife Smitha (42). According to the police, the couple was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside their residence in the morning by residents. Their son M Sivanandan (19), an engineering student, had died after being hit by a train while he was on the way to see a concert by rapper Vedan on Dec 29, 2025. The mishap happened while he was walking along the track. Since then, Venugopal and Smitha had been in severe mental distress. Following this, Smitha's mother had been living with them. However, she had returned to her own house on Thursday. It is suspected that the couple took the extreme step on Thursday night or in the early hours of Friday. The incident came to light on Friday morning when the neighbours noticed that the house was closed. When they reached the house, they found the couple hanging inside the room. They immediately alerted the police and their bodies were shifted to the hospital. Later, the police recovered a suicide note which reportedly cited mental distress following the death of their son as the reason for their step.
