of Tenhipalam panchayat T Vijith (33) allegedly tried to commit suicide on Thursday. He is admitted in ICU of

medical college in a

serious condition

. Police said his wife found him and Vijith was immediately taken to a private hospital at Chelari first. Vijith had won the election as IUML candidate in 11th ward and got elected as panchayat president, which is reserved for SC category, on Wednesday.


Tenhipalam inspector G Balachandran said the reason for his alleged suicide bid is unknown. “He is unconscious. As per prelim info, he took this step due to mental stress,” he said.

“It is learnt that two local groups in IUML and Congress had exerted pressure on Vijith after he was elected panchayat president,” LDF said. UDF panchayat committee refuted the allegation.
