MALAPPURAM:A four-month-old with a congenital heart disease died of Covid-19 at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital on Friday, taking Kerala’s coronavirus death toll to four.
The baby, Naiha Fathima, who had atrial septal defect (ASD), had tested positive on April 22 after being admitted the previous day for with fever, cough, breathing difficulties and seizure.
She had come from Payyanad and was admitted to KMCH on April 21 with fever, cough, breathing difficulties and seizure. Medical authorities are yet to trace the source of her infection.
Meanwhile, Covid tests have been conducted on her parents and relatives and the results are awaited. Doctors who attended to her have been asked to be in quarantine.
According to a medical bulletin released by the hospital, “She was administered hydroxycholoquine and azithromycin following the positive result. As the baby was not showing any improvement, the medical board met on Thursday and decided to give steroids, tocilizumab and lopinavir. The permission for starting antiretroviral therapy was obtained from the state board and neuro medicine and cardiology consultation were also obtained. Despite all possible efforts, the baby continued to be in shock and developed cardiac arrest at 6am on Friday.”
The burial was held at Kannamparamba Masjid in Kozhikode following Covid-19 protocol.
