West Bengal polls: CAPF makes schools their home for a month

KOLKATA: With central forces arriving at their premises well ahead of the polls, many state-aided schools have decided to delay first summative exams until the elections are over.

They also plan to conduct the examinations before the onset of summer vacation.

The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) has given nod to these schools for the same.

Due to central forces putting up on the campuses, classes have been disrupted.

Dr Shyamaprasad Mukherjee Institution in Beliaghata had to postpone its exams. The entire campus is occupied by the central forces currently.

“The question papers are ready. But the school can’t hold exams now. We are determined to hold the exams after they leave the campus,” she said, adding that the school would conduct exams even if the summer holidays start.

Park Institution School was supposed to commence its examinations on April 1. The campus remained occupied even on March 30. Basab Kumar Mukhopadhyay, teacher-in-charge, said, “We postponed our scheduled exams and informed board officials. We will try to hold the exams before the summer holidays begin.”

Didoo Maheshwari school in Burrabazar is planning to reschedule exams before the summer vacation begins. According to the WBBSE notification, schools were told to conduct exams by April 15. Several missed the deadline because of housing the forces.

The second summative exams are scheduled for Aug. If schools are not able to hold exams in May, students will not get even three months to prepare for the next examination.

Central forces entered St Peter’s School mid-March. It switched to online classes. It managed to start exams on April 7 in the hall. Father Subrata Baidya, its principal, said the school was conducting exams in two shifts. A WBBSE official said schools had been given the freedom to plan the exams in accordance to their convenience.
