officials struggling to rescue a sub-adult elephant stuck in an empty well for hours since early Monday had a “Eureka moment” when they applied
Archimedes
principle and filled the pit with water to allow the young jumbo crawl out of it.
The rescue operation took place at Musna village in Salboni block’s Pirakata range of Midnapore Division and a video of the operation is all over social media now. “The rescue operation was successful using the Archimedes principle of buoyancy. We managed to rescue it by 4am and found it to be healthy. Our officials safely guided it back to the nearest forest area,” said Midnapore DFO Sandeep Berwal.
Archimedes principle is a law of physics fundamental to fluid mechanics that states: “Any object, totally or partially immersed in a fluid or liquid, is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object. ”
Berwal lauded the effort of Laxmikant Mahato, Shrabani Dey, Biswajit Mal, Bimal
Soren and other forest staff who worked in tandem to successfully rescue the jumbo. Senior officials like Berwal and ADFOs Bijoy Chakraborty and Buddha Dev Mondal oversaw the operation.
“Few lessons of swimming and learning about buoyancy, the Elephant was rescued and guided safely into Forest. . ” Berwal had tweeted on Monday while sharing the video. The clip was also shared by several IFS officers and animal rights activists.
