NADIA: Human organs are on sale. The fact was further augmented on Thursday with the
Railway Protection Force (
RPF) arresting two persons - Animesh Biswas and Binay Yadav - for allegedly luring an elderly woman, Avarani Das from Budbud in Burdwan, in acute financial distress to sell her kidney.
The duo denied link with any kidney racket but on preliminary inquiry, Biswas conceded he has been in the trade abiding all "government rules".
He also said he procured six such kidneys for three hospitals in Chennai for a commission of Rs 30,000 for each kidney.
Without going into the legality of the trade, Avarani's case can't be termed as voluntary. In fact, Avarani and her husband was going through acute financial crisis for quite sometime, which might have prompted her to take up this drastic step, her husband Sankar told the police. In fact, Sankar intimated the RPF about the deal after failing to dissuade his wife from such 'donation'. Avarani got the clue from an advertisement in a Bengali daily on June 25, which asked people willing to donate kidney to contact Animesh. Ava took it as an opportunity to come out of the financial hardship. She called up Animesh and fixed a meeting without informing her husband. As planned, she stepped out of her house on Wednesday and met Animesh at the ticket counter of Kalyani station.
Unable to find her in the neighbourhood, husband Sankar feared that Ava might have got in touch with the tout whose cell number was there on the advertisement. He called Animesh over phone posing as a kidney donor and fixed a meeting at the ticket counter.
Getting a hint of the location, Sankar immediately got in touch with the RPF personnel on duty and narrated the entire episode. The police advised his son Bishal to pretend as a donor. While Bishal was talking with the touts, the RPF men nabbed the two.
"We have arrested two persons identified as Animesh Biswas and Binay Yadav on basis of the written complaint from Sankar Das. It is learnt that the agents operate by giving classifieds in Bengali newspapers," said Anup Dutta, in charge of Kalyani RPF outpost. While Sankar complained the tout had made a price offer to his wife, Animesh denied the charge, saying he didn't make any financial commitment as the 'deal' was not finalised.
