KOLKATA: A 40-year-old Trinamool Congress leader was shot at after a group of miscreants fired several rounds and hurled bombs in a crowded market near Jagaddal police station on Sunday around 9am. Two persons have been detained.

A witness said, armed goons fired at least four rounds and lobbed two crude bombs. Trinamool Congress president of ward 12 in Bhatpara Municipality, Ashoke Shaw, who was struck by a bullet on his back, ran to Jagaddal PS to save himself.

He was rushed to Bhatpara State General Hospital and discharged after treatment

A police team led by Barrackpore police commissioner Alok Rajoria came to the spot to investigate the shootout. "We suspect a personal rivalry could have led to the attack. A raid is on to nab the culprits and surrounding police stations have also been alerted," the police commissioner told TOI.

Shaw had gone to a local market on Jagaddal's Pal Ghat Road. "As he came out to have tea at a nearby stall, five masked youths fired at him from behind," said Shaw's brother Mukesh.
