KOLKATA: Eight days after threeyear-old

Dipanwita Bhuniyan

— a resident of

Gorapada Dutta

Lane in

Ultadanga

— was admitted to SSKM Hospital with 65% burns after being allegedly pushed into a pot full of hot water, the child passed away around 5am on Saturday. Doctors treating her and the police said that she had immense pain and was unable to turn to her side.

Based on her incomplete statement — “dhum kore pore gelam” (I fell hard) — cops arrested their tenants Rajesh Gupta and his wife Sonu, who were later released on bail. Her father had lodged a complaint against them.

“We could not record the child’s statement as her condition remained critical. We will use the circumstantial evidence to build up the case. We have added IPC section 304 (

culpable homicide

not amount to murder) and would appeal for the cancellation of bail of the two accused. They will be subjected to further questioning,” said an officer.

Dipanwita’s father, a truck driver, alleged that the couple killed the girl as they had a longstanding feud over property. The couple, however, denied the allegations. “The child was peeping inside when we last saw her. I was cooking. She accidentally fell into the pot. My husband poured cold water on her and we took her to the hospital,” claimed Sonu.

Doctors said the kid, who sustained injuries on her face, chest, shoulder and hands, avoided everyone at the hospital and was clinging only to her mother. “The girl’s father tried to speak to her about the incident by giving her toys, but the only reply he got was gut-wrenching wails,” said cops. “The child was attended by senior doctors but all our efforts failed,” said a hospital official.
