KOLKATA: A seven-member panel of the state
human rights commission visited JU on Wednesday to conduct a probe, in the backdrop of a notice sent to the state by the national human rights commission on the issue.
The state human rights commission’s committee that was at JU on Wednesday was headed by Shanti Das Basak, who has experience of leading CID investigations.
The team entered the campus around 2pm and spoke to registrar Snehamanju Basu and joint registrar Sanjay Gopal Sarkar, inquiring about measures the university had taken, both prior to the incident and after it, to prevent ragging.
Basak said, “We have zero tolerance in this issue. We have spoken to the administration and heard its versions. Now we will investigate on our own. We will ascertain if all UGC norms were followed.” Sources said the commission was “not happy” with certain answers to questions on following norms.
